#Hashtags: To Use or Not to Use

If you're familiar with social media then you've probably come across a hashtag or two, or maybe even 50, depending on the person posting. By definition a hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a hash sign (#) used on social media to identify messages on a specific topic.


But why are hashtags important to you? When a user clicks on or searches for a hashtag on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn, content from people and businesses using that hashtag will appear. It's a way to filter content to see the kind of posts and accounts that you are looking for outside of the accounts that you’re already following.


Incorporating hashtags into your business marketing is a smart idea, as your content will reach a much wider, more specific audience who is interested in what you're selling or posting about.


The hashtag sweet spot varies for each social platform. Instagram is a great place to use them and we recommend 5-10 per post. For Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter we recommend about 2-5. Be sure to be specific, for example #food has over 350 million posts on Instagram, where as #foodphotography has 42 million. If you keep your hashtags a bit more specific your content is more likely to reach the right person instead of getting lost in the endless sea of photos.
